How to Remove Moisture from Watch?

If you have a watch then attachment of condensation on your watch face becomes a common problem.

Sometimes you do not find any reason to form moisture and sometimes you will notice the reason as taking your watch under deep water or in moist weather.

But when condensation forms on the lens, it becomes difficult to see the time. This can be frustrating and lead to a loss of time.

Whatever the reasons, our main concern is how to remove moisture from watch. In this article, we will cover the causes of condensation in watches, how to prevent it, and how to remove moisture from a watch.

There are some frequent cause of condensation in watch faces:

Drastic Swings in Temperature

This is a natural effect of condensate moist on watch covers. If you wear your watch in hot weather and then go into a cold environment, the extreme change in temperature can cause moisture to form on the inside of the glass.

Warmer air carries more moisture than cooler air. So when you go from sunny outside to wet room then the water molecule in the surrounding air attach themselves as fog to the surface of the watch glass.

A Crack in the Glass

A tiny crack in your watch’s glass can have a big impact. If not fixed, it can lead to fogging and condensation inside the watch, as well as corrosion.

A Failed Water-resistant Seal

Cracked or misaligned water-resistant seal of your watch is another probable cause.

A Plunge into the Deep

If you take your watch in deeper water than its tolerable range then moisture and condensation must enter your watch face.

No water-resistant qualification

If your watch is not water resistant at all usually fog up when you come into contact with any kind of moisture. Washing your hands or taking a shower may cause bubbling out from the side.

Methods on How to Defog Watch Crystal

Go to the watchmaker is a common solution of this problem. But if you have any problem with this such as financial, transportation or shortage of time. Then luckily, there are a few methods that you can use to defog your watch crystal without taking it to a professional.

Absorb the Fog with a Bed of Rice/Artificial Desiccants

Rice has been used for centuries to absorb moisture and prevent clumping, so it makes sense that it would work on watches as well. Instant rice is more effective than uncooked rice because it’s already in a dried state, which makes it better at absorbing moisture.

To use rice to remove watch fog, simply place your watch in a bowl of rice (or another type of artificial desiccant) and let it sit for 24-48 hours. The rice will absorb all the moisture from the watch, leaving it fog-free and good as new!

For some watches it needs to remove the crown. For your advantage we refer the following video to watch how to remove crown.

Get the Mist out of Your Watch under Direct Sunlight

In a warm day, the sun can help evaporate any moisture that’s gotten into the watch, and hopefully clear up the condensation. Depending on the model, removing the crown may tend to speed up the procedure.

Warm the Foggy Watches with Alternative Sources of Heat

In winter or rainy season the sun does not shine brightly everyday, then an alternative heat sources will be a better option for you.

You can use a fire or a lamp as an artificial source of heat. To do this, place your watch on a towel near the fire or under the lamp. The heat from these sources will help to evaporate the condensation inside your watch.

Numerous watch users choose to defog their watches using a hairdryer since it is quick and easy. Place your watch face down on a towel and carefully remove the back. Turn on the hairdryer and sweep the hairdryer over the watch on a low setting.

We hope these tips come in handy the next time your watch starts to fog up.

What Water-resistant Ratings Really Mean for Your Watch?

There is a misinterpreting about the water-resistance ratings indicated at the backside of watch case. Many people believe that a water-resistant rating of 50 meters means that the watch can be used for swimming or diving. However, this is not the case.

The official guidance for watches with a water-resistant rating of 50 meters is to avoid swimming and showering in warm water. This is because the watch is not designed to withstand the pressure of being submerged in water for long periods of time.

The water-resistant rating system is mostly a marketing tool, and it is important to understand what each rating really means before using your watch in any type of water activity.

30 meters (3 bars/ATM): This rating means that the watch is splash resistant and can withstand some water contact. However, it should not be worn for swimming or any other water sports.

50 meters (5 bars/ATM): This rating means that the watch can withstand heavy rain and splashes of water. It can be worn for swimming, but not for snorkeling or diving.

100 meters (10 bars/ATM): This rating means that the watch is suitable for swimming and water sports. However, it should not be worn for deep-sea diving.

200 meters (20 bars/ATM): This rating means that the watch can be worn for deep-sea diving.

When shopping for a new watch, be sure to pay attention to the water-resistant rating and choose a watch that meets your needs. With a little research, you can find the perfect watch for your next water adventure.

When should You Consult Watch Professionals?

If your watch is still foggy after trying the methods described above or your watch starts to show condensation frequently, it may be time to consult a professional. Watchmakers have special tools and techniques for dealing with condensation, and they can usually fix the problem quickly and easily.

How to Prevent Condensation from Happening?

Avoid watch condensation fully is almost impossible. But there are some technique to reduce this occurrence.

The best way to avoid mist in your watch is to purchase one with a water resistance rating that is higher than what you are likely to require. At the very least, I would recommend a water resistance of 50 meters so that rain and hand washing are never an issue. If you plan on cleaning a car or a dog, choose a water resistance of 100 meters.
